San Juan Capistrano, California, USA – August 14, 2013. PMA Research, the worldwide market information experts on front projectors, has published their latest research findings on the worldwide projector market. The high-end segment, which includes projectors with 4000 lumens or more, was again the bright spot as sales rose 6% in the first half of this year compared with the same period last year. On a value basis, worldwide sales of high-end projectors easily surpassed $1 billion during the first half of the year.
In the market for super-bright projectors (excluding d-cinema), manufacturers continued to expand the breadth and depth of their product lines to meet growing demand in developing countries and the accelerating shift to higher resolution projectors in advanced economies. Developing countries now face a more stable worldwide economic climate than a few years ago. This is helping drive renewed spending on high-end projectors for public display venues and higher education settings. And despite the uneven pace of economic recovery in advanced economies, sales of high-end projectors managed to stay relatively unchanged compared with the first half of last year.
In the other part of the high-end market, the d-cinema industry reached a noteworthy milestone in the first half of 2013 as cumulative shipments topped 100,000 on a worldwide basis. However, worldwide d-cinema sales were lower again on a year/year basis as high digitization rates in advanced economies continued to take their toll on year/year comparisons. Offsetting some of the downturn was the rapid uptake of lower-cost models for smaller screens as well as continued growth in China, India, Latin Americas, and the Middle East and Africa. Shipments into these markets for the first half of 2013 hit a record level compared with any other previous six-month period.
