San Juan Capistrano, California – December 31, 2015. PMA Research (PMA), the worldwide market information experts on large displays, recently published their latest report on the worldwide pico projector market. The report provides historical shipments and forecasts for standalone, battery-powered pico projectors and wall- or USB-powered personal projectors.
During the first three calendar quarters of the year, worldwide unit sales of pico projectors and personal projectors jumped 49% vs. the comparable period last year. Revenues surged too, turning in an impressive 40% gain on a year-to-date basis. On a worldwide basis, demand drivers were new chipsets with 1080p DLP as well as 720p from each of DLP, LCOS, and MOEMS, the return of laser-based offerings, expanding lineups at various price points from existing brands, new offerings from phone carriers and large CE brands, compelling use cases for mini home theater and mobile business presentations, and continued gains in price/performance within compact form factors.
Increased adoption of personal projectors as well as the entry of new brands drove robust sales in China, which overtook the U.S. as the single, largest market for pico and personal projectors. Successful trials and commercial rollout of streaming projectors should contribute to strong demand in China during 2016.
In the U.S., unit sales through retail and distribution channels increased 20% and 55%, respectively, on a year-to-date basis through November, according to PMA’s monthly pico and personal tracking reports. The reports provide sell-through volumes, street prices, and revenues for the top pico and personal projector models from brands such as AAXA, Acer, Asus, Cellulon, Dell, InFocus, LG, Optoma, Philips, ViewSonic, and Vivitek.
