Menlo Park, California, USA – February 1, 2010. According to Pacific Media Associates (PMA), the worldwide market information experts on front projectors, the worldwide front projector market grew 34% in 2010 from its 2009 level. PMA found strong growth in numerous categories, most notably the increasingly popular ultra short throw category, the high-end segment (including digital cinema), and the emerging New Era (sub-500 lumen) category.
“The hottest part of the mainstream (500-4999L) front projector market recently has been short throw projectors, used heavily in education classrooms and including interactive models,” said Dr. William Coggshall, President of Pacific Media Associates. “And within short throw, it is the ultra short throw range, i.e., projectors with a throw ratio (the screen width divided by the distance between the projector lens and the screen) less than 0.38, that are growing the fastest. The ultra short-throw segment grew three times in volume from 2009 to 2010.”
Also in the professional market, sales of high-end projectors (5000L+) registered impressive growth over last year as easing in the credit markets helped accelerate d-cinema deployments around the world and the end of the recession boosted demand for projection in corporate and institutional settings.
Although not the largest category within the overall projector market, the New Era (sub-500 lumen) category is the fastest-growing, increasing from about 475,000 units in 2009 to over 1.1 million units in 2010, a year/year growth of 142%. That growth was seen across a variety of segments, including companion pico projectors, pico projectors embedded in mobile devices (cell phones, cameras, camcorders) and low-priced entertainment projectors.
