At the recent ISE tradeshow, Sony announced their expanded laser projector lineup with the introduction of five new models, ranging from 5,000-lumen mid-range compact models to a 13,000-lumen high brightness model. Three WUXGA models, the VPL-FHZ131L (13,000 lumens), VPL-FHZ101L (10,000 lumens) and VPL-FHZ91L (9,000 lumens) are geared towards large venue applications. In addition, Sony announced two 5,000 lumen portable models – the VPL-PHZ12 (WUXGA) and the VPL-CWZ10 (WXGA).
One feature common to all models is Sony’s Intelligent setting function which allows users to choose one of the preset “installation location” modes to automatically adjust the image quality, light source output level and cooling system to achieve the optimal quality for their environment. Users can easily change the settings from a variety of preset modes, including: meeting/classroom mode, which emphasizes the visibility of text in bright environments; museum mode, which prioritizes low-noise and facility mode for entertainment venues, which focuses on image quality with high contrast. In addition, the VPL-FHZ131L, VPL-FHZ101L and VPL-FHZ91L large-venue models are equipped with an advanced intelligent setting functions. These advanced settings include multi-screen Mode, which optimizes color when projecting on multiple units. The advanced intelligent function also automatically controls the temperature of the installation environment, frequency of usage, and several other parameters to ensure the projectors are used at suitable settings conducive to a long-term, stable installation operation.
In addition, the VPL-FHZ131L, FHZ101L and FHZ91L projectors include a wide lens shift function with a short-focus lens option. Its wide lens shift capability (Max. Vertical ±107%, Horizontal ±60%) enhances usability in a range of settings including difficult installation conditions, such as when a venue contains beams or piping, or when the screen is lower than the projector. When combined with the VPLL-Z4107 optional short-throw lens, installation flexibility is enhanced in venues where throw distance is limited. Finally, the three large-venue models offer a variety of interfaces for flexible system integration. 3G-SDI input is enabled with a separately sold adaptor. This makes it possible to operate projectors in locations where projectors are often used together with broadcast equipment. In addition, these projectors now support the XTP Systems of Extron Electronics and Crestron Connected.
The smaller VPL-PHZ12 projector utilizes a 0.76-inch LCD panel with an incorporated optical compensator to deliver images with high contrast so images and text can be seen clearly, even in bright environments. it is also equipped with a dedicated terminal for HDBaseT and a LAN terminal for network control. Users can monitor the status of units remotely using the LAN, while simultaneously transmitting video/audio/control signals long distance with the HDBaseT. The VPL-PHZ12 also support Extron Electronics’ XTP Systems.
The VPL-CWZ10 uses a small 0.64-inch panel, making it approximately 40% smaller and 35% lighter than it’s predecessor, the VPL-PWZ10. This increases flexibility when installing these projectors in small-to-medium size class rooms and meeting rooms with limited space. and enables portability.
Display market analyst firm PMA Research has been tracking the 5,000 + lumen laser projector market since it’s inception, and has noted the exceptional growth of this product segment. In 2014 just a few thousand units shipped worldwide, but by the close of 2019 that number had exceeded 300,000 units and accounted for a large percentage of worldwide projector market revenues.
