At the recent CinemaCon tradeshow, Barco introduced a new high-contrast version of its Flagship Laser Projector series – the DP4K-60L. With a contrast ratio of 6000:1 it doubles the contrast of their existing Flagship Laser high-brightness version and almost quadruples the contrast of 4K lamp projectors. The new flagship laser models also boast a brightness level of up to 40,000 lumens. Barco already has 100+ installations with more than 40 movie theater chains in over 20 countries.
The new model is equipped with the proprietary Barco Alchemy Integrated Cinema Media Processor (ICMP), and is capable of showing 4K content at 60 frames per second and 3D movies in 4K. The DP4K-60L consumes 40% less power than xenon projectors with the same brightness and the laser light source offers a lifetime of 30,000 hours or more. It also comes with several lens options, geared towards different theater sizes.
Also at CinemaCon, Barco showed it’s range of laser phosphor digital cinema projectors, which include both new and retrofit solutions. If you already own a Barco DP2K-20C projector you can now replace your current lamp housing with the new Barco laser phosphor retrofit module through an on-site upgrade. Barco’s new DP2K-20CLP is the industry’s first 18,000-lumen laser phosphor projector for cinema, and Barco boasts that it offers 3X more brightness than any other offering on the market.
Analyst firm PMA Research has been following the progress in the laser and laser/phosphor DCI projector market, and expects unit sales in both light-source categories to more than double each year in 2016 and 2017.
