Nikon has introduced its latest projector enabled digital still camera (DSC), the COOLPIX S1200pj. The new camera is over 40% brighter than its predecessor, the COOLPIX S1100pj (20 lumens vs. 14), both of which feature VGA (640×480) resolution. The new camera’s DLP imager marks a change for Nikon from the LCOS based optical engines found in the COOLPIX S1100pj and COOLPIX S1000pj . Camera specs and features have also improved, including connectivity for projecting images and video from Apple iPhones, iPods and iPads. The COOLPIX S1200pj will be available in mid-September 2011 at a suggested retail price of US$430.
Since the August 2009 introduction of the COOLPIX S1000pj, PMA’s projector market research has tracked considerable speculation about whether or not DSCs with pico projectors would succeed in the market. Nikon clearly believes in the combination; as does General Imaging, who seems to be doing well with their PJ1 camera/projector under the GE brand.
